As jovirkku stated, signing in to a Jolla account seems to be a mandatory prerequisite. I finally succeeded in signing in, and the update started working immediately.

It is a mandatory prerequisite to have the Jolla account activated on the phone. Otherwise the phone will not get any updates, neither for the operating system, nor for the individual applications.

DNS resolution should be fine as the browser was able to access websites (using domain names, not IP addresses) out-of-the-box. I.e. DNS cache should have been empty.
